Yesterday, the state of California judiciary sent a shot across the bow of homeschooling parents in the state, by ruling that parents who homeschool their kids must have the same credentials as a teacher in public schools.
Naturally, few parents have such credentials, and given the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, few will obtain them.
“Parents do not have a constitutional right to home school their children” said the judge in the case.
DUH. There are no parental rights granted by the Constitution. Wonder if the judge ever read that document…
The cynical person in me says I dont need a government or a constitution to tell me what my parental rights are - and I sure dont need a judge to try and revoke them.
In a related item, a friend who has spent decades working in engineering, very high math, and scientific fields (yes, DoD type stuff) recently applied to teach middle school (6-7-8) mathematics. She has FIVE degrees, including multiple engineering degrees, and a PhD. Note: all engineering degrees, much less 25 years of work in the industry, require high expertise in higher math.
She was told that according to the No Child Left Behind Act, she was unqualified to teach math. Now, sure, she may not have teaching skills, but that wasn’t the accusation. She was told she would have to get a MATH degree before she would be allowed to teach.
Your tax dollars at work, my friends.
