Seems eco-tourism is more profitable than ever - in touring the battered areas of New Orleans.

And we have to thank the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bush Administration, Congress and the government of the state of Louisiana for the progress.

Zero firehouses rebuilt in 2.5 years. Volunteers, musicians and actors, even some from other countries, are having to step in and fix them.

Your tax dollars not at work.

Lady Liberty now says “Bring us your poor, and we’ll stomp the hell out of them.”

Fishing with FEMA: New Orleans gets gigged again

When replacing the fish at the New Orleans Aquarium, the staff had two options:

  • Spend $600k buying them from commercial suppliers.
  • Spend just under $100k catching live specimens in the sea.

The Aquarium chose the latter option and now, FEMA’s “quality control” won’t fund ANY of it.

So an effort to save the US government, and effectively, you me and Joe Blow Taxpayer $500,000 gets kicked in the shorts.

I’m a little surprised that they weren’t asked to come up with insurance records noting the exact size and weight of the fish, so that they could be replaced with exact duplicates. After all, that is the law, and we know they always follow the “letter of the law”.

“that such a mistake could have been made”

The firestorm over the fake FEMA news conference hit a new low today as FEMA apologized for the fabricated press conference.

In a quote from the ABC story on the fake press conference, FEMA’s inability to get it came out loud and clear with this quote:

Friday a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, said Secretary Michael Chertoff was not pleased with the decisions made by agency staff.

“This is simply inexcusable and offensive to the Secretary [Chertoff] that such a mistake could have been made,” Laura Keehner said Friday on a conference call with the media.

“Mistake” is the terminology, yet this decision required a decision. A mistake is not unlike an accident.

On the bright side, they are “looking into the possibility of reprimanding FEMA staff.

I’ll bet they are just trembling with fear.

I have a better idea. Take them to the 9th Ward in New Orleans and let them do some community service while wearing their FEMA gear. Maybe that will wake them up.
