In the UK under provisions of a new bill, if an embryo has been determined to be deaf, it would be illegal to implant the child.
Conversely, it would be legal to implant the child if he/she can hear.
From the Guardian article:
embryos found to have deafness genes will be automatically discarded. ‘This sends out a clear and direct message that the government thinks deaf people are better off not being born,’ says Steve Emery, a sign-language expert at Heriot-Watt University.
I wonder what the Peoples Republic of England will consider to be the next fatal flaw in humans that must be eradicated. Perhaps it’s time for England to bear only blue eyed blondes. Oh wait, that’s already been done.
